Comedy in a “Post-Racial” World

Posted in Articles with tags , , on January 29, 2009 by Vasco Bridges

I’ve always wondered how Americans’ sense of humor will change since Barack Obama has become president.  After all, so many of the jokes in comedic lexicon center around racial differences and stereotypes.

So then I saw this, and realized we havent’ really gone too far.  I find it hilarious.

“Rise Up This Morning
Smile With The Rising Sun
Three Little Birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Swinging Sweet Songs
Of Melodies Pure and True
Saying…This is my message to you”

Barack Obama is now the President-elect of the United States of America.

Fall from Grace?

Posted in Articles with tags , , , , , , on June 26, 2008 by Vasco Bridges

Most of you all know I’m a big Barack Obama fan. I, as well as many others, wrote articles, wore tee-shirts, composed songs and donated to his campaign to get the Democratic nomination for President. Folks like you and I pushed him toward the nomination and now that the prize is within reach, our candidate has disappointed many of his ardent supporters with some of his decisions last week. Can Obama Live?

This guest article is written by Tomiko Ballantyne

I have been very frustrated by my fellow black people in recent months. If I had a dollar for every time someone’s said to me, “They going to assassinate Obama,” I could probably afford a new pair of Jimmy Choos. I will not say white folks have not had these thoughts too, but this commentary is about taking my own African-descended kin to task.

Now Let’s Forget He’s Black

Posted in Articles with tags , , , on June 11, 2008 by Vasco Bridges

Last Sunday, June 8, the yearly tradition of the Puerto Rican day parade overwhelms New York City. It happens every first Sunday in June, when the mass of Nuyoricans color 5th avenue in a wash of red white and blue. For a whole day, the bougiest neighborhood in the bougiest city in the bougiest nation in the world rings with loud thumps of Reggaeton and repeated shouts of B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-Boricua!

Puerto Rico. Ho! For this one day, a prideful people gather to show really how loud, passionate and in-your-face one goup of people can really be. Puerto Rican flags are painted on cars, flown from the highest of skyscrapers, and worn as every article of clothing imagineable. (who knew they made boxer underwear with the PR flag?)

It almost reminds me of the pride that Black folks felt last week when Barack Obama finally (and yes, FINALLY!) secured the Democratic nomination to be president of the United States. We were proud. We smiled, cheered, and congratulated each other. We forwarded emails and re-watched all the great speeches. We compared Obama to every Black leader imaginable. Most of all we just reminisced how none of us thought this could happen in our life time. Black folks have never been so proud.

And so subdued.

Dear Senator Barack Obama:

Posted in Articles with tags , on May 1, 2008 by disedguest

Preface:
I’d like the opportunity to pose some of the questions/issues that are close to my soul and offer up some quotes from Senator Barack Obama in what is my favorite speech he has done to date at Howard University on September 28, 2007. I’m doing this in a sort of call-and-response that they do in many churches. I do not offer up his words as the best solution…I use his words to show at least one of our political leaders has thought seriously about the problems of America’s justice system and perhaps…just perhaps…the chains of racism will begin to break in America’s most stubborn institution.

Jews, Obama and Jeremiah Wright

Posted in Articles on April 29, 2008 by Vasco Bridges

Shhhhh. Can you hear that?
It’s the collective groan of the staff and supporters of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign as Obama’s polarizing pastor, Jeremiah Wright has reappeared on the media scene. After getting berated in the press for several weeks (including an inappropriate, continual focus from Fox News’ resident bag o’ worthlessness Bill O’Reilly) and then repudiated by his former pupil, Rev Wright has returned, bringing his name back into public consciousness. Touch

Posted in Articles on April 23, 2008 by Vasco Bridges

What is this thing called “touch” and why is Barack Obama out of it?

Obama fight ClintonAccording most pundits (and to all Hillary Clinton supporters) yesterday’s Pennsylvania primary proved is that Barack Obama is out of touch with the “average joe”, blue-collar working White American. The kind of guy/gal that is apparently crucial to the Democratic Party victory come November.

But Why? Read more »

The Problem with Black Media

Posted in Articles, news on April 8, 2008 by Vasco Bridges

From a report by Ad Age

A great article about how the shrinkage of Black-owned media is posing difficult for marketers.

“All things being equal, we’d have no problem supporting” black-owned media, said a CMO [Chief Marketing Officer], but “a lot of the true African-American owned media companies are small and very decentralized. That doesn’t fit our strategy of needing to have a national reach. We have looked at some of the options, but the delivery is so small in relation to cost it doesn’t fit our strategy.”

In a world of scale — and the benefits of lower ad pricing that come with it — there are few independent, black-owned media outlets left to support, and those that exist don’t have the reach to offer competitive rates.

Some of the biggest names in black media today actually are owned by corporate titans. The most notable example is BET, which founder Bob Johnson sold to Viacom for $3 billion in 2000. Then there’s Essence: Time Warner’s publishing arm took full ownership of the legacy brand in January 2005.

But the most dismal rate of media ownership among African-Americans is in TV. Only five African-Americans own full-power commercial TV stations; they collectively own eight out of 1,379 commercials stations nationwide.

Lawyers…Hmph

Posted in Articles with tags , , on March 25, 2008 by Vasco Bridges

First let me sincerely apologize to Steve, Lisa, Ellie, Banks, Marcia, Daria, Kai, Lynn, Amilcar, Akilah, Sonia and every other friend of mine pursuing a career in law. No personal offense here, promise.

Because I (as I’m sure most of you ) count lawyers, law school students, and aspiring law school students as very close friends. Many of them have great intentions and an intense passion for change and/or great business acumen and/or strong debating skills. They became lawyers to flex their intellectual muscle to do what they do best.

Without a doubt, lawyers are among our country’s intellectual, professional and economic elite.

But I hate them. Not my friends…just the all the other lawyers I have to deal with on a regular basis.
